December Rose Novella Synopsis
December Rose is a modern day coming-of-age story set in the quaint little town of Merryville. In this first-person narrative, twelve-year-old Josh Sanders recounts the events surrounding the untimely holiday death of his older brother, Nick Sanders, two years earlier. Josh’s story covers a two-year period of the emotional struggle the Sanders family faces as they deal with the loss.
When Nick, an aspiring basketball star, becomes very ill and is diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, Josh notices that his father spends all of his time and energy caring for Nick and less time with him. After Nick passes away, Josh must also deal with the fact that his grieving father has rejected him. While his father throws himself into his work as a distraction from the pain of loss, Josh and his mother cope with their grief together and attempt to maintain some semblance of a normal family life.
Months go by with no improvement until Josh meets a mysterious lady named Maggie, the owner of a recently opened flower shop called Under the Rose in downtown Merryville. Maggie reaches out to Josh and his mother and seems to care deeply about their circumstances. As the situation at home grows increasingly strained, Josh receives wise counsel from his new friend. With Maggie’s help, Josh learns what it means to have faith and hope and the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation. Will Maggie’s encouragement help the Sanders family restore the kind of Christmas they once knew?
